Hun inspirerte Bob Dylan til å bytte fra elektrisk til akustisk gitar - på dagen - og var den første Janis Joplin imiterte

Forleden kom jeg over en fenomenal versjon fra 2005 av den amerikanske (eller muligens engelske) folkevisen "The House of the Rising Sun":

Sangeren var den da (trolig) 74 år gamle Odetta - som jeg aldri hadde hørt om før.  Men det hadde andre:

 

Bob Dylan:  "The first thing that turned me on to folk singing was Odetta. I heard a record of hers [Odetta Sings Ballads and Blues from 1956] in a record store, back when you could listen to records right there in the store. Right then and there, I went out and traded my electric guitar and amplifier for an acoustical guitar, a flat-top Gibson. ... [That album was] just something vital and personal. I learned all the songs on that record."

 

Janis Joplin "spent much of her adolescence listening to Odetta, who was also the first person Janis imitated when she started singing".

 

"As a major voice in the American Civil Rights Movement, she marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Selma, sang for the masses in Washington in 1963 [da han holdt sin "I Have a Dream"-tale, også Bob Dylan sang der], and performed for President John F. Kennedy at a civil rights presentation on national television."


Noen måneder før Odetta døde i 2008 (hun hadde håpet å synge ved Barack Obamas innsettelse i 2009) , sang hun en stor versjon av anti-apartheid-sangen "(Something Inside) So Strong":
